Newly Promoted Managers at Mental Health Risk
New research has found that a promotion to managerial and supervisory positions can increase the level of mental strain in employees. It was found that post-promotion, workers were more stressed and had comparatively lesser time to visit the doctor.
The research, which was undertaken by specialists from the field of psychology and economics at the University of Warwick, pointed to the fact that getting the much sought after promotion may not be such a good thing after all. It can affect the mental condition of workers in a significant and permanent way.
The 1000 workers interviewed had been promoted to supervisory and management posts in the last five years. When they were asked about their general health and well being, it was found that contrary to common belief, they had experienced no improvement in health conditions after promotion.
On the other hand, they now suffered from mental strain and tension almost 10% more than before. Another point of concern was that a majority of the recently promoted section said that there had been an almost 20% fall in visits to their doctors. The increase in workload because of the promotion was seen as a potential cause of this. The researchers supported this idea by claiming that the reduced number of medical visits was clearly not because of improved health. Chris Boyce from the team of researchers highlighted this aspect, and commented that the only noticeable difference was the reduced attendance at GP surgeries, which may in fact be something to worry about.
