Google Launches Nexus One Handset
Google’s main business of online search-related advertising is worth more than £12 billion. However, an impressive portfolio of the company does not stop here. It has just launched a handset called the Nexus One, which has led to speculations regarding whether it will be able to compete with Apple’s iPhone which has already become very popular.
However, according to Google, it has launched the device to help and defend its main business of online advertising. It does not have any market share in mobile advertising currently and the recent trends suggest that Google is ready to make its mark in this field.
There is no reason why Google would pass on such an opportunity considering its existing resources of online advertising. As Danny Sullivan, editor of SearchEngineLand.com, said while speaking on the BBC, Google is a superpower in advertising and it has stated that there will be a time when mobiles will become completely advertisement supported. Thus, Google has grabbed the opportunity to do so as soon as the opportunity came before it.
To make its move successful, Google has also taken very bold steps as far as price structure is concerned. Unlike many other similar devices, the Nexus One is not permanently linked to any mobile service provider and the consumer can make his choice.
However, as expected by many, Google has not subsidised the cost of the gadget itself by using mobile advertisement revenue. Currently the gadget costs $529 (£332) on Google web store (not locked to any network), or $179 (£112) with a T-Mobile contract of two years.
If you are in the market for a new mobile phone, or are approaching the end of your contract and considering changing service provider – click on broadband phone – for broadband and phone bundles. Some of the top end deals from several of the internet service providers add a mobile phone with minutes included.
